This error appeared on a clients computer the other day, all other computers connect to the Windows 10 file share without issues.
From the computer not connecting to the file share. It could ping the computer IP address but failed to resole the host-name.
I opened file explorer type into address bar – //192.168.1.xxx we connected. The next day the issue was back.
As I was working remotely I had to be careful not to lose connection. I flushed the DNS on local computer. Still same error.
I then though SMB error.
I enabled SMB 1.0 to see what happens.
Start>Control Panel>Programs and Features
Click “Turn Windows features on or off” (Left hand side).
Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
Tick the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal and
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Server
SMB 1.0 is a very insecure protocol and should not be used.
Restart the computer file share working.
I was still not satisfied that this was the underlying issue. As it was working without SMB1 before it stopped connecting.
Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status
Scroll to the bottom
Click Network and Sharing Center
Click Change advanced sharing settings
Expand All Networks
Under Password protected sharing
Switch between ‘Turn on password protected sharing and Turn off password protected sharing’
Then choose ‘Turn off password protected sharing’
Then click ‘Save changes’
After making change in networking and sharing center file share was still working. I decided to head back to Windows features and turn of SMB 1.0.
Reboot the computer and file share in still working.
While this fixed my issue, there could be other things stopping the file share from working. IPV6 for instance could be the issue.
