Windows 11 24H2 – RDP session hangs on logon.
We can VPN in successfully. When I hit the “Remote Desktop” icon to log in, the log in page that has the dots go around in a circle then stops and everything freezes. I then try to log in again and get less dots circling before the freeze. I will try three of four times and just get a frozen screen.
This seemed to happen on computers with Windows 11. 24H2 version installed.
After testing we found that the issue was related to two things.
First, we disabled wallpaper while using remote desktop (Enforce removal of remote desktop wallpaper)
using group policy from our Windows server. If you do not have a Server, just use the local computer policy.
Second, we Disabled “Turn off Connect Time Detect and Continuous Network Detect” on the local computer Policy.
Use the run menu: gpedit.msc
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections. Here, you’ll find an option labeled “Select network detection on the server.”
The computer will need to be rebooted for the changes to be initiated.
